Rod Laver at TGW July 08 2015

Four-time Wimbledon singles champion ROD LAVER came to the gallery on Tuesday 7 July to sign copies of his excellent autobiography and meet dozens of his fans. We now have signed copies of Rod's book in both hardback and paperback, and these are available on a first come, first served basis while stocks last. We wish to think Rod for spending his valuable time with us, and everyone who met him now knows him to be a kind and modest man as well as one of the all time greats of tennis.

Sportsmans Book Club May 21 2015

In the 1950s and 60s a mail order book service was operated from London to provide affordable books for sports lovers. The Sportsmans Book Club published cheap editions of quality books which members could buy for about a third of the original published price. The books were hardbacks in the club's distinctive thin paper dustjackets. Sports covered included cricket, football, rugger, boxing and - from time to time - lawn tennis. SBC books share a highly readable style which now half a century later seems absolutely charming! We have some SBC books at prices under twenty pounds, and we will be adding these to the website shortly. Titles will include the SBC edition of Lew Hoad's autobiography My Game.

Jamie Feaver Visits Tennis Gallery Wimbledon November 30 2014

Yesterday we were delighted to have a visit from JAMIE FEAVER, coach at Team Bath and author of the popular book A LOAD OF BALLS about life travelling the world on the satellite circuit. Jamie has recently been coaching doubles ANNA SMITH and they recently travelled to Asia together for some tournaments. His book has been selling steadily since Issue 8 of WHAT'S NEW IN TENNIS was distributed, and he is having a reprint done early in 2015. The book is a very useful and inspiring read for up-and-coming young players and their parents, and the last few copies from the first edition printing are available from Tennis Gallery Wimbledon now.

SUZANNE LENGLEN - TENNIS IDOL OF THE TWENTIES is about the extraordinary life and career of the French star who won Wimbledon six times between 1919 and 1926 and was never beaten in singles during her adult tennis career. The customer who bought the book asked where Suzanne would rate in the all-time list of great women players. He said she must surely be in the top four or five. My reply, based on the opinions of those I respect, past and present, was that there was only one question: whether Suzanne was the outright all-time No.1, or jointly held that honour with Martina Navratilova.

2015 ATP / WTA Tour Media Guide November 02 2014

For those of you new to Tennis Gallery Wimbledon, one of our annual activities is to be the sole European distributor of the 500-page book 2015 ATP / WTA Tour Media Guide, the yearbook of professional tennis. The book has excellent profiles of around 300 players with their photographs, plus full details of all ATP and WTA Tour tournaments. Each year we agree with the ATP the total number of copies to be shipped across, and the books reach us in early January, enabling us to get them out quickly ahead of the Australian Open. The Wimbledon Official Annuals for 1985 and 1986 are now back in stock. We only have one or two of each, and we will give first option to buy to people who previously asked us to find these rare editions for them. Little Signs October 22 2014

Wimbledon's Honorary Librarian ALAN LITTLE showed modest surprise yesterday when asked to sign another batch of copies of his new book for Tennis Gallery Wimbledon customers.  The book is entitled THE GOLDEN DAYS OF TENNIS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA 1874-1939 and weighs in at a solid 1.7 kilograms. Alan's modesty is refreshing in these days when self-promotion is the norm for many authors, and the reason his new book is so popular is easy to see. The tournaments at NICE, CANNES and MONTE CARLO in the late 19th and early 20th centuries attracted fashionable, well-to-do people from all over the world to watch and play, and this glamorous heritage remains part of tennis's unique appeal today. We think Alan will be asked to sign a lot more books in the weeks and months to come!

200 Books & 100 Films October 18 2014

We have just acquired a marvellous collection of tennis books and films, and we are in the process of sorting through and cataloging them. There are some great titles including Jack Kramer's THE GAME, Andre Agassi's OPEN and biographies and autobiographies of Ilie Nastase, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg and many, many more. The collection includes yearbooks and annuals, including a complete set of Wimbledon official annuals from 1983 to 2011. There are scarce Wimbledon official films too, some on DVD but most on VHS cassettes, and we will be contacting people with news of items they have asked us to find. The books are in the gallery right now, so come along today if you want to see them before they go on sale on the website.
