This book celebrates Wimbledon in a unique way. JOHN McPHEE, author of the tennis classic Levels of the Game, visited Wimbledon in 1970 and wrote about the experience. His essay, entitled Hoad on Court 5, is included here along with an earlier piece of prose entitled Twynam of Wimbledon. The latter pays homage to the All England Club's legendary head groundsman ROBERT TWYNAM, whom McPhee spoke to at length to research the piece. The text is wonderful, some of the best ever writing about Wimbledon, but ALFRED EISENSTAEDT'S superb photographs take the book to an altogether higher level. He captures the players and the All England Club, bringing his own fresh perspective to every shot, but he also captured what it felt like to visit The Championships during the heady early years of Open Tennis. Without doubt this is one of the best ever books on Wimbledon.
