Sadly ABE SEGAL passed away on 4 April 2016 at the age of 85. He had been playing tennis regularly until just four months before his death. We will miss him here at the Tennis Gallery, for he came here several times during the last few years, including one occasion when it was raining during the Wimbledon Championships and he stayed all morning and well into the afternoon, signing books with individual dedications for customers born more than fifty years after he played on the Centre Court. Afterwards I dropped him off at Gate 5 of the All England Club, and years later he was still telling me that I was a crazy driver, going much too fast. In fact, the traffic was heavy and we never got up to 30 miles an hour!

Abe always had tactical theories about how to beat the top stars of today. In the case of Rafael Nadal, he had some passionate theory about how to play against him, and he thought other top players such as Federer, Djokovic and Murray were crazy for using the wrong tactics against Rafa.

Abe Segal's larger-than-life autobiography HEY BIG BOY is a must read book for fans who enjoyed Gordon Forbes all-time tennis classic A Handful of Summers, in which Abe was the main focus of the funny and poignant anecdotes about life on the road as a tennis player in the 1960s and 70s.
