Little Signs October 22 2014
Wimbledon's Honorary Librarian ALAN LITTLE showed modest surprise yesterday when asked to sign another batch of copies of his new book for Tennis Gallery Wimbledon customers. The book is entitled THE GOLDEN DAYS OF TENNIS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA 1874-1939 and weighs in at a solid 1.7 kilograms. Alan's modesty is refreshing in these days when self-promotion is the norm for many authors, and the reason his new book is so popular is easy to see. The tournaments at NICE, CANNES and MONTE CARLO in the late 19th and early 20th centuries attracted fashionable, well-to-do people from all over the world to watch and play, and this glamorous heritage remains part of tennis's unique appeal today. We think Alan will be asked to sign a lot more books in the weeks and months to come!200 Books & 100 Films October 18 2014
We have just acquired a marvellous collection of tennis books and films, and we are in the process of sorting through and cataloging them. There are some great titles including Jack Kramer's THE GAME, Andre Agassi's OPEN and biographies and autobiographies of Ilie Nastase, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg and many, many more. The collection includes yearbooks and annuals, including a complete set of Wimbledon official annuals from 1983 to 2011. There are scarce Wimbledon official films too, some on DVD but most on VHS cassettes, and we will be contacting people with news of items they have asked us to find. The books are in the gallery right now, so come along today if you want to see them before they go on sale on the website.Keep Those Tennis Postcards! October 15 2014
A small Edwardian postcard album containing 49 cards showing tennis scenes has been valued at £200-£300 by ANTIQUES ROADSHOW experts RUPERT MAAS and ERIC KNOWLES. As the cards originally would have cost around one old penny each, that suggests each card has risen in value by 4000 to 6000% ! However postcard collecting is not about money, it s about the fun to be had seeking them out and the pleasure the images on the cards can bring.
The valuation was given at an event organised by PERKINS SLADE insurers. It was held on Tuesday 14 October 2014 at the newly-refurbished Edgbaston Priory Club.
Book Problem Solved! September 09 2014
Last Friday the first batch of WIMBLEDON 2014 Official Annuals arrived, but we found that some of the books had ill-fitting dustjackets. We know how important it is for our customers to receive books in 100% perfect condition, so we reported the problem to the distributor and today replacement copies arrived.
